9th December, Technion, Haifa
IPS2004 will be held on 9th December 2004 (HANNUKAH), at the TECHNION. The homepage is at http://physics.technion.ac.il/~ips2004.
Should one hold IPS meetings at a University or a conference center? We have the best of both worlds and are holding it in the spacious new LIDOW Physics Complex that looks like a hotel (see pictures of the entrance, foyer for registration, and the poster and discussion area), but costs like a University.
We have space for more than a hundred posters and many parallel sessions, as well as areas in which small groups can hold discussions during the day. (Please reserve an area in advance, by emailing ips2004@physics.technion.ac.il with an approximate timeslot.)
This year's conference aims to enable University and Industry researchers to share their new results with each other. There will be special emphasis (as usual in our meetings) on the opportunity for Graduate Students to present their research and hear about new advances.
A call for graduate student prize nominations has been made to Department chairs with a deadline of 19th November.
For this meeting we will revert to some of the older customs, such as paying annual membership at the meeting. Full membership is 100 shekels for researchers for full membership, and 50 shekels for students, retirees and current school teachers. Full members will pay 50 shekels for the meeting and student, retiree and current school teacher members, 25 shekels for the meeting. If you register in advance (before 19th November) and have paid your membership you will be exempt from the conference fee. Nonmembers will pay 150 (researchers) and 75 shekels (students etc.) for the meeting. (As in the APS, invited speakers are also expected to pay.)
We also we also have innovations, including a a new interactive abstract submission webpage to make abstract submission easier. This system is now open at http://phstudy.technion.ac.il/~ips/abs.html.
Abstract Deadline - 19th November for submitting abstracts for invited talks and poster presentations. However, if you want your abstract sent to session organisers to be considered for oral presentations, it must be submitted by 9th November. (Note that not all session organisers will accept contributed oral presentations; some sessions will be invited papers only, this is at the discretion of the session organiser.)
A list of on-campus lunch possibilities (not included in registration) will be provided for your personal choice. This will include sandwiches at our hbar cafe for those who wish to view posters during lunch, and a wider choice at our Student Union for those wanting a substantial meal.
For practical logistical reasons we are not joining with the Physics Teachers this year at their request; however, teachers are welcome to attend and will receive a registration discount on presentation of suitable documentation.
We are pleased to announce that Professor Gabriel Aeppli, of the University of London, has acccepted our invitation to give one Plenary Talk. A second plenary speaker will be announced shortly.
Several invited speakers from overseas have been selected; researchers who still wish to propose invited speakers (and are prepared to help fund the speakers they propose inviting from overseas) should email newslet@physics.technion.ac.il with the subject INVITED SPEAKER.
I wish us all a successful meeting,
JOAN ADLER
P.S. IPS2004 is a preliminary event for the World Year of Physics in 2005, and there will be a poster presentation about about Albert Einstein's 1923 visit to the Technion on display.
